SANFORD’S USED AND RARE BOOK GATEWAY since 1997

FOR SALE

Our House Books & Coffee is now for sale.

Dan and Bev Mulvaney opened the doors to Our House Books & Coffee in January 1997 with 10,000 books, a little home cappuccino machine, a coffee maker, a refrigerator, and some snacks. But now, after almost 12 years, the store is up for adoption. (For sale, for all you business-types).

OHB&C was the cultural catalyst in Sanford Fl for many years. The 1300 sq ft store front is now warehousing the merchandise. On this website you will see some of the diversity of people and activities, books and folklore that have been part and parcel of this store over the years.

MERCHANDISE: Books range from fiction to nonfiction; hardback and paperback- various subjects and themes. There are some new volumes and many 19th century ones. Most stock is modern used, however. There are a variety of books-on-tape, trading cards, videos, CDs, 45s and LPs.

ABOUT SANFORD: Sanford is the county seat of Seminole County, Florida. The population was 38,291 at the 2000 census. As of 2006, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 49,124. A historic agricultural and resort area, Sanford is home to the Delta Connection Academy, Seminole Community College and the Central Florida Zoological Park. The city is situated beside Lake Monroe and the St. Johns River. The store is one block off the popular pedestrian lake.

Residents include: comedian and actor Larry the Cable Guy, tennis player Jim Courier, baseball player David Eckstein, and frozen food tycoon Jeno F. Paulucci.

CURRENT BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT: Sanford is the home of one other use bookstore. The need and local desire for diversity is strong. Our closing has created vacuum and many have been affected.

The local economic outlook is strong; Sanford is the latest projected sprawl of Greater Orlando. The population growth of over 10,000 residents in six years bears this out. The community has had a rebirth via re-urbanization and the federal Mainstreet program. Many events at the lakefront and adjacent park (which are both directly beside and behind the storefront) draw hundreds of thousands of people. The storefront environment is ripe for this venture. However, rental arrangement is independent of sale.

E-COMMERCE: Online sales are the biggest growth in book sales and research. We increased our sales $2000 per month when expanding to this medium. The data program comes with the sale. The inventory management program we use was designed for use by out-of-print and antiquarian booksellers, but now is accessible with ISBN lookups and price comparisons. You are able to export books, clients, wants, invoices and catalogues for reporting and data management for many different programs.

You can use this program to streamline every aspect of bookselling: from maintaining entire inventory, issuing receipts and invoices to selling online through most major booksellers; including ABE and Amazon.

There have been numerous poetry events, movie and game nights, International Dinners, birthday parties, going away parties, debates and political discussions, and one wedding. And, of course, Earl. Some great stories have been recorded as Dan kept a journal for the first six years of virtually every day's activities.

The brick-n-mortar is now a place to hold the books as they are processed for e-commerce. The young poets, dreamers and thinkers have moved on, some getting married and starting families, others taking to the streets.

WHAT IS EARLBURG … EARL?

Earl, the Black Pig (although sometimes purple) is a developed image and personality for the store starting in about 1999 as a result of a conversation with Jay J. about the bohemian beginnings. The origin of the Black Pig began around the late 1890's from two distinguished men, Edmund Munch, an artist and August Strindberg, a playwright, who, upon seeing a pub with calfskins on ends of chains hanging over the door, decided to make that establishment their home for artistic revolution. It is believed Strindberg was the one who claimed the swinging chains with skins on the end made the sound of suckling piglets. The group was dubbed the "Ferkel (piglet) Circle." Quite by coincidence, in or about a hundred years later, it was Jay, once again, who came in talking about a man who was roaming his neighborhood the night before… named Earl. The look and mannerism of the man (which I, unfortunately, don’t remember much about, except that he was slightly goofy in appearance as Jay described him), was entertaining enough to find an association with a store mascot pig. The name stuck. A short time later Douggie (our resident artist) saw a book in our bathroom that, coincidentally, was authored by a man named Blackham. That one was just too easy! Thus, Earl Blackham was born. EarlBurg became the name of the newsletter and has become it’s own identity over the years.
